Ghosts: Mylings

Created in Imagin AI

In Scandinavian Folklore, there are spirits called Mylings. These ghosts are of children who were killed by their parents. They're killed in infancy before they can be baptized. Because these unwanted children were not baptized they are left to roam restlessly. They appear as children with dead and ghastly appearances.

They usually haunt the area where their parents or mother hid their bodies. They are often mischievous. they will transform into animals that humans capture and then trick humans into and change back into a child running away laughing. Sometimes the children would be hidden near their mother's home. Likely under the floor, dirt cellar, or in nearby woods. Mylings can be heard singing in the dark trying to reveal their death.

Many tales tell of Mylingar wanting revenge and/or trying to kill their mother by sucking milk from the mother's breast and don't stop until it has sucked out all the blood from the woman's body. Mylingar are mischievous children spirits that like to play pranks on people. They could transform into animals that humans capture but then transform back into a child and run away laughing.

One simple way to give a Myling rest is simply by giving it a name. Many of them were likely newborns and were never given a name. Giving them a name will help them feel at peace.

They have to try to convince someone to bury them in hallow grounds. The Myling will jump on the back of the person and hope for help. This person will carry the Myling to a cemetery, but sometimes it's difficult for the benefactor to do so. The Myling sometimes gets heavier and heavier even causing their benefactor to sink into the ground or suck the life from the benefactor making them weak. If the person is not able to bury them they kill that person in rage.

Sometimes Mylings will want revenge instead. They will do this by trying to kill their mother. They will suck the milk from their mother's breast and don't stop until they suck all the blood from her.

The Bocksten Man

In the 1880s a farm called Bocksten in Varberg Municipality, Sweden was created near a bog. The bog had been regularly drained and a harrow was used to gather peat by the owner Albert Johansson. A leather shoe was found in the wetland and donated to the Varberg County Museum, and later a shoe sole was also found in the bog.

On June 22, 1936, Albert's son Thur found a body while gathering peat. His harrow got caught on sackcloth. When Thur examined what he was hitting he saw parts of a skeleton. The next day Albert and Thur went and notified the police and doctor. It was then realized that the body was not recent and too old to be of investigation.

Johan Albert Sandklef, the director of Varberg County Museum, took over the body. He would invite others to help investigate the bog body that would eventually be called the Bocksten Man. They would measure and photograph the area before excavating.

The upper parts of the man passed through the harrow and were badly damaged. The lower parts stayed intact though. Though the body had been damaged his body is considered one of the best-preserved finds in Europe in that Era.

It's believed he had been hit at the lower jaw, then the right ear, and then the lethal hit was towards the back of his head. He was then pushed to where he was found and impaled with three wooden poles used for roofing to the bottom of the bog.

Bocksten Man's inner organs, parts of the lungs, liver, brain, and cartilage were preserved. It's believed that he's between 25 and 40 (more likely 35 to 40), but could be up to 60-years-old. He was 170 to 180 cm (5'7" to 5'11") tall with a slender build. His tunic was well-preserved, one of the best-preserved from that time. It was made of woollen fabric. He was wearing a gugel hood that was  90cm long and 2cm wide liripipe. He was wearing a shirt and a cloak and his legs were covered by hosiery. He had a fabric bag, foot coverings, leather shoes, a belt, a leather sheath and two knives. The sheath was 40mm wide and 62mm long, it was composed of 3 layers with a combined saltire and St. George's Cross carved on the outer layer. The inner laver had a similar pattern was carved, but with a pole added

The time he died was based on his clothing it's believed that he may have died between 1290 to 1430. His stature and items/clothing found with him makes it believed he was an upper class or a merchant.  It's also suggested that he was a tax collector or soldier recruiter.

According to Albert Sandklef a local farmer, Karl Andersson, had heard of legend from when he was a child. His father was told bt two older people that a soldier recruiter was killed by local peasants. His body was put in the bog, but his ghost would haunt the area. So in order to stop it, poles were stuck into the body. Albert Sandklef asked other locals of this, but no one claimed to have heard of the story.

It's believed he had been hit at the lower jaw, then the right ear, and then the lethal hit was towards the back of his head. He was then pushed to where he was found and impaled with three wooden poles used for roofing to the bottom of the bog.

The Swedish Spheres

On May 16, 1808 something strange was seen in a little town called Biskopsberga, Sweden. The village was located near Skanninge in Ostergotland, Sweden. The town at the time housed 300 people, but in the present doesn't exist anymore. The unusual phenomenon that was seen that day is remembered.

That afternoon was described as cloudless and warm. A hard wind was blowing from the west. Weirdly enough without any clouds in the sky, the sun began to grow dim. It turned their village a dim brick red. It was so dark that people could stare at the sun and not feel pain.

It was noticed that in the western horizon round spheres appeared. The spheres weren't very big. The spheres headed towards the sun and turned from a dark brown to a black color as they got closer. They slowly began losing speed, but by the time they passed the sun they sped up again. They seemed to have disappeared when it reached the East. The event lasted for around two hours. During which it seemed like million of similar spheres appeared to do the same thing.

K.G. Wettermark was a respectable citizen and secretary of the Swedish Academy of Sciences. He was there to witness the spheres. He had claimed that one of the spheres fell near him. He claimed that before it fell to the ground that it looked similar to soap bubbles. The kind children created when playing with soapsuds and reeds. The place where the bubble had fallen left a gelatinous film. It was described as thin and fine like a cobweb. It was still changing colors but had soon dried up.
