Ghosts: Minnie Quay

James and Mary Ann Quay moved to Forester, Michigan in 1852, they would own a tavern called "Quay". Their firstborn, Minnie, would be born in May of 1861, their second, James Jr., in 1870, and their youngest Charles in 1874. Forester was a bust lumbering town and had a busy ship port for the lumber.

Like many of the people in Forester Minnie would also go see the ships. Like many of the girls in town, she fell in love with a sailor. It's unknown now as to who the sailor was, but no one in town approved of the relationship between the young girl and the sailor. People in town would often warn her about the relationship, and her mother would tell her that she would rather see her dead than with that man.

In April of 1876, 14-year-old Minnie would be devastated by the news of her sailor's ship had gone down in the sea. She was greatly upset especially since she was never able to tell the sailor goodbye. Her parents had not allowed her to go see him before he left for the last time.

A few days later on April 27, 1876, Minnie would walk through town to Lake Huron. She would then commit suicide by jumping off of the town pier into the icy waters. Her suicide was witnessed by her little brother and he alarmed others of what she did. Though they were quick to help Minnie's body would be found an hour later.

It's said that her ghost haunts the beaches. She is seen crying mournfully waiting for her sailor to return back home.  Others state that she tries to beckon young girls to the water and try to drown them.

Urban Legends: Bloody Mary

Historically the divination ritual had young women walking up the stairs backwards with a mirror. It could show the face of their future husband or a skull, which represented them dying before marrying.

More commonly today individuals or groups would try to contact Mary by standing in a dimly lit room in front of a mirror. The persons involved would have to repeatedly say "Bloody Mary" or "Hell Mary", or "Mary Worth" in order to summon her in the mirror.

Mary would show up in the mirror as a ghostly or as a corpse. She can either be friendly or evil being sometimes covered in blood. If she appears with evil intent she could curse at them, try to kill them, steal their soul, scratch out their eyes or drink their blood or haunt them.

Some say that Mary was a young woman who died of illness in the 1800s. Except she wasn't dead when she was buried and instead was in a coma state. a string tied to a bell was connected to the girl in case she was to wake. Mary would tug at the bell and no one was to hear it as it would fall to the ground. She would then die inside her grave unable to escape

Urban Legends: Killer Tan

In 1987  a young woman wanted to get a glowing tan before her wedding. She was to get married the next week and started late on her tan. She would go to a tanning salon and come out disappointed in her session. She was not as dark as she wanted. She realized that there were limitations to how much she could tan at each salon. She would then decide to make appointments for several salons in the next few days to get to that preferred color.

On her wedding day, she was the color she wanted, but she did not feel good and there seemed to be a smell she could not get rid of. While taking pictures she had a nose bleed and died. It had turned out that she had cooked her insides and the smell was her insides rotting.

There are variations of this urban legend. In some, she's found baked alive in the tanning bed, in others she may just lose a body part. This urban legend mostly serves against misuse of technology like tanning beds and to follow precautions set out to keep yourself safe.

Ghosts: Slag Pile Annie

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the former Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation mill the ghost of a woman haunts the mill. She is typically seen in a remote and hard-to-access part of the mill. It's not surprising that if ghosts exist that they would haunt steel mills. Steel Mills are still dangerous, but since safety measurements are implemented.

During WWII a lot of women went into the workforce many of them taking jobs that were considered "dangerous" for women. It was said at this time Slag Pile Annie was working at this particular mill during this time. She would continue to work there even after the war ended. It's vague on the incident, but Annie died in an accident by hot slag. It's said that she still resides there and people who talk to her don't realize she's a ghost till later.

One story/sighting of her happened in the 1950s a college student working at the mill for the summer. He was assigned to drive a buggy pilling empty hopper cars through a tunnel that ran under blast furnaces. He would wait for the furnaces to empty and would drive through and pick p the hot slag that spilled and filled his hopper cars. He would then take them to the slag dump.

On one day he would happen across a woman in a poorly lit tunnel. The woman was in her late 40's wearing work clothes and a red bandanna. He pulled up next to her and told her that she'd get killed in the tunnel if she was there at the wrong time. She would tell him "I can't get killed, I'm already dead." The young man was not sure how to respond and continued work. When he was done he decided to tell the foreman about the lady and what she'd said.

When he described her the foreman told him that she was in fact already dead. He informed the college student that she had died doing the same job that the college student was around 5 years before.

Folk Tales: Blue Beard

In the 1600's Blue Beard is a wealthy and powerful nobleman and a well-desired groom in idea, but his unusual blue beard made him unattractive. Though many women and girls found him repulsively ugly he was able to marry several beauties. The problem with that is that each one would mysteriously disappear.

One of his neighbors, a noble lady, had two beautiful daughters. Bluebeard asked the woman to allow him to wed one of the daughters of her choice. The girls were, of course, repulsed by him and his blue beard. They also didn't want to become another wife that would mysteriously disappear.

Blue Beard had a plan to win their affection. He would take them, their mother, and several of their friends to one of his country houses. They would spend a whole week of parties, hunting, fishing, dancing, mirth, and feasting. Everyone would spend the nights joking and enjoying each other.

The younger of the two sisters began to fall in love with him and was starting to think he was a mighty civil gentleman. The two would soon wed. A month after Blue Beard would tell his young bride that he was obliged to take a country journey of about 6 weeks. It was about affairs of great consequences. He told her she should invite her friends to their home if she pleased.

He would give her keys to his treasures and she was allowed to each one except for a certain closet. He told her she could not go to the closet at the end of the great hall on the ground floor. He warned her if she did she would receive his anger and resentment. She would promise to do that, and her friends would come.

Her friends would tell her that they would not come while her husband was there because they feared him. They would see and look at all the riches of the home and be impressed and happy for their friend's newfound life.

At the party, the door haunts her, and her desire to open it increases. The treasures she had access to were so grand and she wondered what was so magnificent that was hidden behind the door. Her impatience allowed her to slip from the party and to the forbidden door. She would take the key out and opened the door with trembling hands.

What lied behind it was horrible. The floors were covered in clotted blood, and along the walls were the missing wives. Each one had been brutally murdered. She thought she would die from the shock it scared her so much. She would drop the key in the blood. She would go back to her senses and lock the door and went to her room to think.

This is when she noticed the key was stained with blood. She tried to clean it off, but would not as the key was magical and evidence of her betrayal was stained upon it. To her surprise, Blue Beard would return home that night. He stated that while he was on the road letters came telling him the affair he was going to deal with was concluded. She pretended to be excited and not show she was terrified that she was the next wife to disappear.

The next morning Blue Beard asked for his keys back. He asked her what had happened to the forbidden room's key. She had hoped he wouldn't notice. She would tell him it was upstairs on the table, and he requested her to bring her the key.

She was terrified as she brought down the blood-stained key. He automatically knew of her betrayal of his trust.

"Why is there blood on the key"

"I do not know." She cried.

"You do know!" Blue Beard was angry, "I very well know. You went into the closet, did you not? Very well, madam; you shall go back, and take your place among the ladies you saw there."

She would throw herself down on her feet and begged for forgiveness. He had a heart of stone and her pleads did not change his mind. He's heard this all before.

"You are to die Madam."

"Since I am to die give me time to pray alone." She cried. He would answer her wish.

"I give you a quarter of an hour nothing more." He demanded.

When she was alone she called out to her sister Anne. She asked her to go to the top of the tower to look for their brothers and to give them a sign of haste. Anne would go up the tower and be on the lookout for their brothers.

She could feel her time ticking and would call up to Anne occasionally. But there were no signs of their brothers when the impatient Blue Beard called up to her demanding her to come down with a sword in hand. His threats kept coming and she kept telling him one moment more. That was when Anne spotted their brothers coming. His anger seemed to shake the home and the young wife came down the stair unwillingly.

She would throw herself on his feet again begging for forgiveness and keep her life. It still did not work on his stone-cold heart. He would grab her hair with one hand and raise his sword with the other. She asked to collect herself. He was about to refuse and was about to strike her when a knock on the gates stopped him.

Two horsemen were her brothers and would enter with their swords drawn. With one brother was a dragoon the other a musketeer and Blue Beard knew he had no chance. He would flee without killing his young bride and the brothers would pursue him. They would overtake him on the porch and ran their swords through him. The girl had no strength to greet her brothers. Blue Beards' crimes would be known and she'd be known as the one who survived.

The young bride was now a widow and her husband's estate was hers. She was able to allow Anne to marry the man she loved, She married a man she loved, and she bought Captains' commissions for her brothers. She would eventually forget her nightmare with Blue Beard.

Urban Legends: Man In the Elevator

In South Korea, there is an urban legend about the reason why elevators have a stop button now.

One night a young woman went home late. She lived on the 14th floor so she went to the elevator and right before the doors closed a handsome young man came onto the elevator. He pressed the button for the 13th floor. When it stopped on the 13th floor he steps out of the elevator and turns with a knife in hand saying "I'll see you on the next floor."

The girl panics and tries all the buttons, but none of them stopped the elevator. She could only hope he does not have the chance to beat the elevator and she could make it to her apartment. Unfortunately, as the doors open the last thing the girl sees is the blade.

Ghosts: Ghost at the Crime Suppression Division Jail Cell

There is a jail cell at the Crime Suppression Division in Thailand that is haunted. In 2009 there was a story of a man called Somboon who was being held in the cell for acting as a loan shark. He claimed that he saw a man in a red shirt and seemed to go into a trance. The red shirt man would ask Somboon to shower. Somboon would then follow the man and felt as if he was under a spell.

The red shirt man would then start ripping his shirt into strips. The red shirt man would then demostrate how to hang yourself. He would then ask Somboon which bar he would choose. This was when Somboon came out of his trance and screamed alerting guards. He would then be detained in another place after his scare.

This was not the first time that a prisoner would see this mysterious red shirt man. Few who stayed in there claimed to hear a voice telling them to kill themselves, but was always saved by the end of the attempt if they did so.

It's believed that the spirit is that of a man who hung and killed himself in the cell. At the time he was accused of molesting his niece.

Demons: Yan-gant-y-tan

Yan-gant-y-tan in the Dictionnaire Infernal, 1863

In Brittany, France there is a demon called Yan-gant-y-tan, also knowns as Wanderer of Night or John with the Fire. The Yan-gant-y-tan wanders in Finistère at night. He's typically seen as a wiry old troll or hairy wildman and holds five candles on five fingers on his right hand. The Candles spins about like a flaming wheel which prevents him to turn quickly for fear of extinguishing them. It is a bad omen to meet the Yan-gant-y-tan.

A sure way to ward off the bad omen the Yan-gant-y-tan would bring is to leave a small bag of gold or gold chair around a travelers post for it, and they would leave the house for another day. But it is said that he may appear to a weary traveler and give them five candles as they have none and they'll help light the way for the traveler that night.

Monsters: Dziwożona

Dziwożona. Woodcut by Jan Styfi (1839-1921) based on an earlier engraving by Henryk Pillati.

According to Slavic folklore, a Dziwożona is a female swamp demon. It's believed that women would become one after death. Typically these women were midwives, old maids, unmarried women, pregnant women, and children that died before birth or were abandoned after birth. She usually lives in thickets near rivers, streams, and lakes. She typically is seen as an old woman with a hairy body, long straight hair, and breasts so large she uses them to wash clothes. She's usually wearing a red hat with a fern twig attached to it.

Dziwożona is said to kidnap newborn babies and switch them with her own children (changelings). If she did switch it was noticeable that the child was a changeling. They would have an uncommon appearance such as a disproportionate body, a disability, huge abdomen, unusually proportioned head, a hump, thin arms and legs, hairy body, or long claws, and would prematurely cut their teeth.

It's also said that these changelings would have a wickedness to them. They would be spiteful towards others, fear its mother, noisiness, be reluctant to sleep, and an exceptional glut. It would be rare for a changeling to reach adulthood as they typically die young. As an adult, they gibber instead of talk and do not trust people.

In order to keep the Dziwożona away from their newborn's mothers would tie a red ribbon around their child's hand, put a red hat on its head, and shield its face from the moon and sun. She should never wash the nappies after sunset or turn her head away from the child when it sleeps. Another method is to keep a St. John's wort flower at home or nearby as to grab it if she comes for the child for protection.

If she was able to take the child and leave a changeling there is a method to get the child back. The mother would have to take the changeling to a midden and whip it with a birch twin and pour water over it from an eggshell. While doing this she will have to shout "Take yours, give mine back!" The Dziwożona would want to save her child and switch them back.

Ghost Ships: Caleuche

The Caleuche is a ghost ship in Chile folklore and comes from the island Chiloé.

One version claims that the crew of the Caleuche is of those who drowned in the sea. These souls are brought to the ship by three Chilote Mythological siblings. The two sisters Sirena Chilota and Pincoya and their brother Pincoy. On the ship, the dead seem to live again as if they never died. The ship will arrive briefly and have the sounds as if there was a party on board.

Another version of the legend is that the ship appears in the sea of the Chiloé Archipelago and attracts fishermen and sailors. It plays enchanting music that enslaves them to be a part of the crew for eternity. These new crewmembers would forever have a leg folded over their back for eternity.

Another version of the ship is that it is a magic ship that Warlocks use to have parties and transport their

goods. It's used by warlocks to improve their magical abilities every three months. The warlocks are only able to reach the ship by summoning caballo marino chilote because Millalobo, king of the seas, prohibited any other people from boarding the ship or getting to it by any other means.

Monsters: Azukiarai or Azukitogi

The azukiarai as depicted in Takehara Shunsen's Ehon Hyaku Monogatari.

The Azukiarai (azuki bean washing) or Azukitogi (azuki bean grinding) is a yokai in Japanese folklore. A mysterious noise near rivers or bodies of water that sound like azuki beans being washed, the yokai would sing "will I grind my azuki beans, or will I get a person to eat? shoki shoki." Anyone who approaches ends up falling in the water.

The Azukiarai is mostly heard than seen and is described as grotesque. They're described a man of short stature with a large balding head, crooked teeth, thin mustache, large bulging yellow eyes, has large hands with only three fingers, and ragged clothes. When he's seen he's bent over a pail washing azuki beans. They are described as being shy and hiding when people come. It's believed that it's good luck if you actually spot him.

Sometimes the Azukiarai is blamed on a tanuki or weasel.

The Dröbnitz Girl

In 1939 the body of a girl was found in a bog in Dröbnitzer Moor, Dröbnitz (Drwęck) Poland. In an attempt to recover the mummy both of her legs were removed at the hips and were left in the bog. The mummy was well preserved and with x-rays, it was determined all internal organs were recognizable and extremities were well preserved.

The body would be dubbed The Dröbnitz Girl and was between 12 to 14-years-old when she died. She likely lived and died in the iron age during the Hallstatt period around 650 BCE. She was wrapped in a large sheepskin cloak with her arms crossed over her chest. A wooden comb and a crest were found with her body. It's believed that this was a ritual funeral instead of sacrificial.

The body was destroyed or lost during WWII so further research could not be done. There is some information though. Samples of the bog suggest when the body was placed in a shallow pond that silted up and became a peat pond. Her stomach contents had the presence of leaves, flowers, residues of peas, wheat, meat fibers, and animal fats. High amounts of pollen were also discovered leading them to believe she may have been buried in the spring. She had evidence of malnutrition, whipworm, roundworm, and their eggs in her stomach. Which at the time would not have been uncommon

Curses: The Chained Oak

Near to the village of Alton, England, there is an old oak tree wrapped in chains on a footpath to the left of the Chained Oak B&B. The tree is known as The Old Oak and according to legend, it holds a deadly legend for a family.

One autumn day in the 1800s the Earl of Shrewsbury was on his way to the Alton Towers in a horse and coach. Suddenly there was an old woman who showed up in front of them. The coach would stop to find out why the woman was there. The woman would then ask them for a coin. The Earl would ignore and cruelly dismiss the poor woman. She would then tell the Earl that she had cursed him and each time a branch fell off of the old oak tree one of his family members would die. The Earl refused to listen to her silly curse and continued on his way.

That same night a violent storm would happen. It would cause a single branch from the cursed tree to fall. A member of the Earl's family would die mysteriously that night. The Earl now believing in the curse would order servants to chain every branch together to prevent branches from falling and the premature death of a family member.

There are some variants from retelling the tale. Sometimes it's an old man, sometimes the branch falls on the Earl's son with the old woman watching, and in some tellings, the Earl takes the branch and does experiments on it to find a way to end premature deaths. But did it happen?

The legend may have been around since 1821 which would make it the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury, Charles Talbot. But other sources say that the legend has been around since the 1840s which would make it the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot.

Now if it was John Talbot this legend does not match what he was known as. He was remembered as "Good Earl John", he had a very good reputation of being charitable. He supported and helped communities build in the Midlands. He was known to have supported schools and churches, and even helped build new Catholic chapels in the Midlands. He was also known to help build almshouses for the poor and elderly in Alton.

He did have 4 deaths of family members after the 1840s, but none of them was sudden or mysterious. His youngest daughter Lady Gwendoline Catherine Talbot died in 1840 at 22 in Rome by Scarlet Fever and 3 of her children died shortly after from measles.  Making it unlikely that the man was him if some of the legends were true.

On April 9, 2007, one of the main branches from the tree fell off and no one from the Talbot family mysteriously died.

The tree may have been chained in an attempt to preserve it. The 15th and 16th Earls extended Alton Towers and planted many new trees. The old trees like the chained oak were greatly prized and since it was in a highly visible place it was chained to keep it from collapsing under its own weight.

Murder of Auli "Kyllikki" Saari

Auli Kyllikki Sarri(back right) with her sisters

On May 17, 1953, 17-year-old Auli Kyllikki Saari was cycling to her home in Isojoki, Finland from a prayer meeting in Merikarvia. On this particular day, she stated that she was tired, and others found this unusual. She stated that she was going to attend another prayer meeting at Kortteenkylä village schoolhouse. At 6pm she left on her bike and rode 40 minutes to the prayer meeting.

Maiju, a friend of Kyllikki, also attended this meeting. The two would ride home together at 10 p.m. and at 10:30 the two would separate at an intersection. Maiju noted that her friend seemed apprehensive and depressed. When they had gotten to where they needed to separate she seemed nervous to go on alone stating, "Probably it goes now as it has before. Bye then, Maiju."

A man named Tie-Jaska saw her a mile further from where she and her friend separated. After this, no one saw Kyllikki alive again. She did not arrive home and her family assumed that she stayed the night with Maiju. When she didn't arrive home two days later they assumed she was staying with someone in Isojoki to be closer to work. They would find out she didn't show up to work and didn't see her. She would be reported missing two days after she disappeared.

In the weeks after her disappearance witnesses stated that there was a suspicious cream-hues car with a bike in a nearby storage compartment. Others state that they have heard cries and sobs for help neat the lake in Karrankaja. No one knew what had happened to Kyllikki until October 11, 1953. Her body would be pulled from a bog.

The bog was close by to where Kyllikki was last seen and it was obvious she had been killed. She had been pushed down with a pine branch into the bog. She was nude from the waist down and her jacket was wrapped around her head.  She had either been suffocated or died from blunt force trauma to her head. It's unknown if she had been sexually assaulted or not.

The pine branch used to push her and keep her in the bog was freshly cut. It had been sharpened by someone who was left-handed. Her shoe, scarf, and a man's sock were also found there. Items of hers were missing though, her wristwatch, red cloth purse, and hymn book were never found.

Kyllikki wasn't one to go out to dances or entertainments. It's believed that she did not have a boyfriend as she didn't tell anyone about having one. She had told an older female friend she had no interest in men and didn't want to get married.

The person who killed Kyllikki had to of been strong. Alli, her older sister, said that Kyllikki was strong and had good arm strength. Not only that, but the person must have carried the girl a distance to the bog, dig, and then refill the grave. Which would have taken some strength to do.

There were several suspects in the crime, but no ones been convicted in the girls murder.
