Urban Legends: Pan of Cherokee Park

Cherokee Park is located in Louisville, Kentucky. It's a good place to see some natural scenery and maybe be able to see the mischievous Pan come to life.

In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Hogan from Anchorage, Kentucky submitted a letter to the Board of Park Commissioners. They suggested building a water fountain for dogs and horses and offered $7,000 in order to help erect one. The Commission would ask park designers, and Louisville park architects Olmstead and Associates to find a site for the fountain. The highest part of Cherokee Park was chosen.

To Mrs. Hogan's suggestion, they decided to the Greek God Pan to be the subject of the fountain. Lousiville sculptor, Enid Yandell, designed the fountain. The statue of Pan was sculpted and cast in bronze to appear lively. Pan who has a human body, horns on his head, and goat legs and feet appeared to be dancing holding his musical pipe. He is flocked by turtles that are used as water spouts into the 14 ft wide basin. The basin was decorated with four dog heads from which water also flows into a trough.

The fountain would be erected and dedicated on August 31, 1905.

According to urban legend during the full moon or maybe even every night at midnight Pan comes to life. It's said that Pan gets up to mischief sometimes even damaging vehicles nearby.

Murder of Dawn Andrea "Magic" Svocak

On the night of August 16, 1984 20-year-old Dawn "Magic" Svocak went to Blair's Bar on Marion St. in Plattsburgh, New York. This was a gay bar at the time. She would leave around 2:30 a.m. the next morning. She would fail to return to her apartment at 71 Clinton St. Her ex-girlfriend and her then-partner would report her missing.

A belt, knife one of her red boots were found in the alleyway that connects Marion St and Oak St. This was within a block of her apartment and the bar. Police believe that these items were left here by the killer to stage a scene and detour the search for Dawn. So that the search would be focused downtown.

It wasn't until a little over a month later on September 21st that she would be found. In Beekman along ST-9 and Stafford Rd just a few miles outside of Plattsburgh two farmers were cutting down crops in a cornfield when they found Dawn's body. She had died from blunt force trauma.

A friend of Dawn's believes that it was probably someone they were close to. Likely someone they knew from the bar and a part of their community.

There may be people who were part of the LGBTQ scene in the area who may know something. At the time the LGBTQ  people and the community as whole did not see eye to eye. At this time people weren't as accepting of LGBTQ people. The bar itself was also a place where drugs and fights were more common than not. It was a rough place for partying. Likely people who didn't come foward were probably afraid of what they'd be asked.

Though there was a rift between the gay community and community as a whole the police did not drop the ball in this case. If this case is to ever go to trial because of the throughness of the investigators the crime scene could be recreated down to the exact measurements.

Murder of Alexandra "Alex" Anaya

On August 12, 2005, 13-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Anaya would have a late-night meal at White Castle with her mother. They would go back to their home on the 4000 block of Pine Avenue in Hammond, Indiana. In the early hours of the next morning, Alex's mother, Sandra, would leave and return by 6:45 a.m.

When her mother returned she found that the door was unlocked which was unusual. She had remembered locking it before leaving and Alex was very conscious of the door being locked before going to bed. Alex was still up when her mother left, but told her she was going to bed soon.

So Sandra went to check on Alex and her younger sisters. Alex's bed was empty and she was nowhere to be seen. I would be unusual for Alex to just leave. Sandra thought that maybe Alex had gone to the nearby corner store. So when she went outside and found Alex's shoes on the steps outside their home she began to worry.

The police would be called to report Alex missing. The police had told her it was likely that she had run away. Her mother thought that was out of character for her but thought that it was possible as she was a teenager and may be going through a rebellious phase. Her family would still search the streets for her. It wasn't for 3 long days until any news of Alex would be heard of.

On August 16th a family would be on their boat in the Little Calumet River. They would spot what they thought was a mannequin floating in the river. They called the police because they thought the mannequin could cause damage to other boats.

When authorities arrived it was a gruesome discovery. It was the torso of a teenage girl. DNA would identify her as Alex.

Only her torso was found, Her limbs, head, and a necklace she always wore were never recovered. It was found that she had been sexually assaulted, and she died soon after she was last seen as the fries she ate with her mother were in her stomach. It's possible that the necklace which was a religious gold medalion may have been kept as a trophy.

For the desired outcome if you wake up with a toothache during the night you were to go to the Toothstone. You bring a hammer and nail and then hammer a nail into the stone. This was to magically heal your toothache.
