Murders of Octavio "Chico" Martinez and Ann Bergman

On the night of August 7, 1962 18-year-old Ann Bergman and her roommate Rachel thought that they were going to spend the night at home. That is when 32-year-old Octavio "Chico" knocked on the door and wanted to take Ann out dancing. The two would go to the Town Lounge on 600 West State Street in Rockford, Illinois.

That evening the Town Lounge was having a dancing competition with the first prize being a bottle of pink champagne. Chico would park a block away and the two would go to the competition. The night ended on a happy note as they had won the pink champagne with their moves. The couple would leave around 12:50 a.m.

What people didn't know was that Chico and Ann did not make it to his vehicle. The two were abducted and forced into a vehicle. At 1:20 a.m. just 30 minutes after people saw Chico and Ann the Police Department got a call.

A truck drive spotted a man's body on a part of Belt Line Rd close to the Kishwaukee intersection. Police would arrive and find Chico's body. He had signs of a struggle and had been shot three times. Once in the shoulder and twice in the chest. He had other wounds and his shoes were scuffed up.

It's believed that Chico struggled with his killer or killers and was shot. It's thought that Chico attempted to leap from the vehicle. The driver then stopped the car and shot Chico two more times and leaving with Ann.

When Chico was identified a frantic search for Ann was done as the couple had been together that morning. The police were able to trace the couple's whereabouts throughout the night except for a seven-minute window where they were forced into a vehicle and driven to the outskirts of town.

Ann would be searched for, but not found for another 6 days in Ogle County. On August 14th a man was walking with his children down a road by his home. He would spot a foot sticking out of the grass along Highway 72 on the east side of  Rock River. It was Ann and unfortantly before the police could notify the family, they found out from the news.

A coroner would conduct and autopsy under a tent placed where she was found. She had injuries including a shattered shoulder and was shot through the heart. It's believed that Ann died the same morning that Chico did. It's possible that Ann was even killed the same time that Chico was and for some reason was transfered to where she was found.

Their case remains unsolved.

Their parents weren't initially scared the children didn't return home on the 700 block of Butler Drive. They were considered adventurous children and tended to wander. They would become concerned though and report them missing. There was an extensive search of the area for four days, but there were no signs of the children.

The London Stone

The London Stone sits in Cannon Street in London, England behind a glass panel (formerly an iron gate). The purpose or reason for the preservations of a small block of limestone still a mystery. Originally the stone was a part of a larger object and was fixed in a street. For hundreds of years, the Stone was considered to be the heart of London. It had become a traditional place for people to pass laws, claim debts, declare oaths, and make official proclamations.

The first mention of the London Stone was in 1188. It was referenced with Henry Fitz Ailwen also knowns as Henry Lundenstone referring to the area in which he lived. He had become Lord Mayor of London. It's possible the stone had been there up to 924-939, one website said it was actually first mentioned in documents.

During Jack Cade's failed rebellion in 1450, Jack Cade was said to have struck the stone with his sword and declared he was "Lord of this City." In 1520 it was indicated on a map that the stone laid in the middle of the street.

In 1742 the stone was moved further north on the street and then was built into the wall of St. Swithin''s Church. During the WWII Blitz, the church was badly damaged. The stone survived even though it home did not, in 1962 the Church was demolished. The stone was then moved to a wall in 111 Canon Street where it now lays.

It could have been a something similar to a Roman Milestone. In which it was used to pinpoint a place to which all distances in Brittian or at least London were measured. This theory was done by William Camden's Brittanica in 1586.

The Stone may be the Stone of Brutus. The legend goes that it may have been part of an altar built by Brutus of Troy for the Goddess Diana. Some believe that the stone was blessed and had blessed London. "So long the Stone of Brutus is safe, so long London will flourish."

It's possible that the stone was used in another religion as a form of worship. It could be possible the stone was used in ancient druid practices. This theory also came about in the 1500's by John Strow. In 1598 John Strow wrote The Survey of London in which he goes over his theory.

Some believe that it may be the stone that King Arthur pulled the sword out of. It's highly unlikely though as a mystery lies with King Arthur. No one really knows if the king was real or not.

In all honesty we may never find out why the London stone has been so important for hundreds of years. Hopefully for the next few hundred the same care is done for the stone and it's mysterious ability to survive Londons most difficult times.

Murder of Larry Jo Phebus

In October on 1962 14 year old Larry Jo Phebus was living in Tioga, North Dakota with his older brother Chester Phebus and friend Sam Wallace. He had moved from Petersburg, Indiana to live with the two. All three of them were living in a travelers motel, and Chester worked at an oilfield job.

On October 20, 1962 Sam and Chester went on a double date to watch a movie in Willston. They left Larry Jo home alone, and when they got back there was no sign of him. It was strange because whenever Larry Jo would leave he always left a note, so that they wouldn't worry. There was no note left at the motel room.

Chester started his search by asking friends of Larry Jo if they had seen him. He also went and asked people both from Ray and Tioga if they had seen him, but no one had. The last time anyone saw him was that Saturday. On Monday October 22, 1962 Chester told the police that Larry Jo was missing.

Larry Jo was known to hitchhike between Ray and Tioga, but never hitchhiked for over 30 miles. Thinking it could be possible though Chester had contacted his family in California, Illinois, and Indiana to see if Larry Jo had shown up. He never did and never would. On March , 1963 his body was found in a grain field near Alexander, North Dakota on Mar 28, 1963.

On March 28, 1963 Farmers were removing rocks from their field near Alexander, North Dakota when they found a body of a boy. It was obvious that before death the boy had suffered. Larry Jo was found nude with cord wrapped around his wrists and feet tied and neck. He had been strangled to death and sexually assaulted.
