The Aschbroeken Man

In 1931 the body of a man was found in a peat pit  in Drenthe near Weerdinge, Netherlands. The body was well preserved, unfortunately, his skull was lost soon after discovery.  The body was that of a man who lived and died during the bronze age between 1316-928 B.C. He would now be known as the Aschbroeken Man as his identity will never be known.

The man was between 35 and 45-year-old when he died. His bones showed that he had broken his right upper arm once, and the fracture healed wrong. This caused the arm to point slightly outwards. He had growth spurts from around 9 that were likely caused by being ill or malnutrition at the time.

It's unknown why he ended up in the bog, but his arm may have been the reason. Evidence from other bog bodies in the Netherlands showed that many of them also had some sort of disability. This may have been the reason he ended up in the bog also.

Bog Bodies: Weerding Men

In 1904 two bog bodies were found in Drenthe, Netherlands in the southern part of Bourtange Moor. The two were laid together in the bog initially making people think they were a couple and or related. This would lead to one of the bodies (the smaller one) being thought of being a woman. Leading for them to be called the Weerding Couple, or Mr. and Mrs. Veenstra. Later DNA tests showed that they were both males and were not Maternally related.

The Weerding Men likely died between 160 BC and 220 AD. One of the men (the better preserved one) was found with a large wound in his chest with his intestines spilled out. It may have been ritualistic and may have been in an attempt to divine the future by reading entrails. It's unknown if this was the way he died or was killed. It's unknown how the other man died.

October 24, 1976, Maarsbergen, Netherlands Heul Girl

On October 24, 1976, the body of a nude teenage girl was found under some leaves near Maarsbergen, Netherlands. She was found in a wooded area around the parking lot "De Heul" on the A12. People believe they saw the girl being dumped by two men between 30 and 40-years-old. She'd been dumped 3 weeks to 6 months.

A year earlier a teenage girl went missing in the area. She was misidentified as the girl and buried under her name. In 2006 it was learned that the missing girl was now a woman and had been living in Germany for years.

She is a white female and was between 13 to 15-years-old. She was described as having light skin. She's 5'3" and had a slim body. She has auburn to chestnut-colored hair. She has fillings.

Isotope tests were done on her teeth. In the first 7 years, her life was spent in Germany's Eifel to Ruhr area, and in 1975 she possibly lived in Germany or the Netherlands. It was also found she had a very unbalanced diet before her death, possibly from malnutrition.

Who Was the Girl With The Pearl Earring?

MH0670

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is a renowned Dutch artist and at the moment there are only 36 known paintings of his. His art typically was subject of everyday life. Likely most of the people represented in the paintings are that of loved ones.

One of his most popular paintings was "The Girl In The Pearl Earring" likely painted around 1665 when he painted other motifs with pearls. It is the size of 17.52" by 15.35" or  44.5 cm by 39 cm. It has a permanent place at the moment with the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, Netherlands. The mystery with this though is that it's unknown who the beautiful girl is. She is pictured in exotic clothing and a large pearl earring.

It's believed that yes there was a model, but that she was used to creating a generic painting of a girl. Some theorize that the model was that of his daughter Maria Vermeer. The painting seems to have resemblances to paintings of that of his wife. Who is also theorized to have been the actual painter of some of his paintings. She was also a talented painter like her father.

Truth is though it will never be known who the pretty and alluring girl in this painting is. It's nice to wander though.

Anonymous Artist: I.A.M of Zwolle

Monograms that help Identify his work
The Betrayal of Christ, (c. 1485)
IAM of Zwolle is was an anonymous printmaker active between 1470 to 1495. He was a Netherlandish artist who's identified from his monogram of IA or IAM and even Zwolle where they may have been from.

The artist may not have had a colorful medium from the printmaking, but his style showed how much tonal nuance engraved pictures could contain. Prints usually use just one ink color and IAM Zwolle was able to create images with depth. The way he spaced out the lines made it seem as if the images were an actual scene. Closer the lines were caused a darker tone and the further the lines were allowed a white or lighter tone.

It was believed that IAM Zwolle was not just a printmaker, but a painter as well from his understanding of tones in his work. Today it is unknown who this artist is or if they have other works under another name. Some suspected that it was Johan van den Minnesten a painter from Zwolle, but his works did not survive they can't compare them.
