Murder of Henry Edward "Ed" Northington

On March 1, 1999, 3 young adults found the head of 39-year-old Henry "Ed" Northington on the walkway on the south end of the bridge on the 1900 block of Texas Ave. in Richmond, Virginia. The head was sitting in an upright position and was obviously placed there by somebody.

Several hundred yards away Ed's body was found at "the tubes" a homeless site upriver from Hollywood Cemetery anchored by twin drainage tunnels. Homeless people would use these tunnels as sleeping shelters. Apparently, this is the area Henry had been staying in. His clothes were thrown into the James River. It's also covered in heavy stones and boulders one of them could have been the murder weapon. Ed at the time was also gay. The place where his head was found was a cruising spot for gays at the time and police suspected it possibly been a hate crime.

He was killed by acute crush injury to his chest and abdomen breaking several ribs. His ribs had lacerated his lungs, diaphragm, and spleen killing him. His killer or killers then decapitated him with a knife between the 3rd or 4th cervical vertebrae.

At the time Henry was suffering from alcoholism and depression and HIV. His alcoholism caused him to isolate himself from friends and family. Some of his family didn't entirely accept him when he came out as gay and this caused him to search for acceptance. He was also not well-liked in the gay community as he was seen as pushy and had frequently been kicked out of gay bars.

Murder of Terrence Demildenhall and Fred Edgi

Photo of Fred Edgi

On September 2, 1986, the body of 22-year-old Terrence Demildenhall was found in his sleeping bag shot to death next to the sea wall in the Waterfront Park 100 yards north of the Morrison Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Terrance was a transient at the time and was last seen alive and sleeping in the same spot around 12:30 a.m.

5 months later on Feb. 27, 1987, 36-year-old Fred Edgi was found shot to death in his sleeping bag under the west side of the Burnside Bridge near Front Ave, now Naito Parkway, just before dawn. A handwritten note near the body was found and it was claiming responsibility. Fred Edgi was a transient originally from Canada and had recently come to Portland. He was a talented amateur artist.

Both murders are believed to have been done by the same person. Fred and Terrance were both transients found shot to death in their sleeping bags in the early hours less than a half a mile apart. They both were described as heavy drinkers. They were different races though. Terrance was white and Fred was Native American.

January 25, 1984 Baker, Nevada J Doe

On Jan. 25, 1984 a faded grayish blue/green, two-door hardtop 1968 Chevrolet BelAir was found 45 miles east of Ely at the Willow Patch Rest Stop in Bakers, Nevada. Inside was a sad sight as a man had committed suicide by connecting a hose from his exhaust into the interior of his vehicle. He had been there for a week and had died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

He left a suicide note signed J with a p.s. requesting $201.40 to be donated to the Mormon Church. The suicide note was similarly written like a prayer.  "Please forgive then all, dear Lord, for any hurt they cause this humble servant whom they never knew -- who got awful tired on the journey and could go no further."

It had been apparent that he was living in his vehicle. The back seat and support seat were missing, most likely to make more room to live in. The glove box had an electric component box, with switches and three colored lights which had five leads going from the device to the celonoid on the starter as a power source. It was thought to be a timing device to turn off the vehicle after a set time. It was possibly homemade. His vehicle had no license plates and the VIN of his vehicle was 155118T240844. There was no match made with the VIN.

He was a white male between the ages of 40 and 46 years old. He was between 5'11" to 6'0" and 170 to180 lbs. He had red or auburn or brown hair that was graying on the sides. He was wearing a thin blue jacket with a hood, a yellow button-up sweater, a white long-sleeved shirt, and green trousers. Additional clothing inside the vehicle included a black medium windbreaker, blue medium shirt, beige medium windbreaker, blue and red checkered shirt, and black golf shoes with the spikes removed. None of the clothes had tags. He had a brown wallet with $201.40 and prescription glasses and military non-prescription glasses.

He has Dentals and Fingerprints, but no DNA.

October 20, 1967 Blendon Township, Michigan Jane Doe

On October 20, 1967, the body of a partially dressed African American girl in a wooded area near an intersection of 52nd and Fillmore of Blendon Township, west of Hudsonville, Michigan. It was estimated that the Jane Doe had died 4 days before.

She was an African American female estimated to be between 14 and 22 years old. She was estimated to be around 5'6 and 100 lbs. She had short (1- 2 inches) black hair and brown eyes. The right side of the face at the jawline had a hyper-pigmented scar, right side of neck had 3 scars about 2 cm each, on the left chest below the clavicle a 10 cm long scar extended towards the arm, and the rest of the scars upper right chest, the mid-chest, the lower chest, right hip, right outer thigh, and left thigh. Her liver indicated that she suffered from hepatitis. Her reproductive organs had evidence of gonorrhea.  There was no indication that she gave birth.

She was wearing two layers of pants. The outer pants were gold-colored ankle-length jeans that zipped up at the front and snapped at the waist. The bottom layer was pink cotton pants zipped up all the way on the left side and was too big for the girl. She was wearing men's grey socks that were not pulled all the way up. She wasn't wearing underwear and was using a makeshift sanitary napkin made out of newspaper.

From the clothing, she was wearing and the makeshift sanitary napkin it is possible that the Jane doe was a transient and or homeless.

Fingerprints are available elsewhere. DNA and Dentals are not available.
