Anonymous Artist: I.A.M of Zwolle

Monograms that help Identify his work
The Betrayal of Christ, (c. 1485)
IAM of Zwolle is was an anonymous printmaker active between 1470 to 1495. He was a Netherlandish artist who's identified from his monogram of IA or IAM and even Zwolle where they may have been from.

The artist may not have had a colorful medium from the printmaking, but his style showed how much tonal nuance engraved pictures could contain. Prints usually use just one ink color and IAM Zwolle was able to create images with depth. The way he spaced out the lines made it seem as if the images were an actual scene. Closer the lines were caused a darker tone and the further the lines were allowed a white or lighter tone.

It was believed that IAM Zwolle was not just a printmaker, but a painter as well from his understanding of tones in his work. Today it is unknown who this artist is or if they have other works under another name. Some suspected that it was Johan van den Minnesten a painter from Zwolle, but his works did not survive they can't compare them.

The Yde Girl Mummy

Images of her and the 1992 reconstruction of her face.

On May 12, 1897, a man working in the Stifveen peat bog near Yde, Netherlands a well-preserved mummy of a teenaged girl. They referred to the girl as Het Meisje van Yde in Dutch.Which it meant the girl from Yde.

Yde Girls body wasn't turned over to authorities till two weeks after she was found. Due to the conditions that a bog has, it allows bodies inside of it to mummify. Her body went through some deterioration and decomposing due to mishandling. People also came to see the body and took hair and teeth from the body.

The mummy had Carbon-14 dating done on her. It was found she had died between 54 BC and 128 AD. She had died around 16 years old.  It was found she had scoliosis of the spine and stood at 137 cm and was short for her age. Her hair was nicely preserved as it was long and reddish-blonde hair. It's possible one side of her head was shaved, but sometimes this shaved feature is seen in bog bodies and it's possible that that side of her head was in oxygen a bit longer.  She was wearing a woolen cape and around her neck was a braided woolen band. The braided band was wrapped around her neck three times.

She had a stab wound to her collar bone, but it is unknown if this was what killed her. It's believed the stabbing happened when she unconscious as there were no defensive wounds.

Her name and story are lost to history. It's not sure why she had died or why her body was left in a Peat Bog. Some speculate that she was murdered or sacrificed. Others think that maybe the woolen band around her neck is evidence that she killed herself. It's not sure what really happened to the girl.

Murder of Debra Horn

On Jan. 29, 1969 11-year-old Debra Horn stayed home from school because she was complaining of a bump on her head. She had gotten it when she fell on the ice. When her parents returned home for lunch they found her gone. They reported her missing to the Allenstown, New Hampshire police.

There were searches for the young girl performed in the area. But it was proved to be fruitless. There was human blood found on a road near her home. It's unknown if the blood had anything to do with Debra. I didn't find any recent articles mentioning it.

On August 10, 1969, a few boys from Massachusetts decided to check out an abandoned car in Sandown. The car had been abandoned for four years by this time. They lifted the truck and found Debra's badly decomposed body.

Her body was too decomposed to know the cause of death or if she had been sexually assaulted. She had a head wound to the back of her head. It couldn't be determined if the injury was caused by her fall on the ice or not.

There were no clothes found on her remains and none were found in the area. Her earing and ring were found in the trunk. She was wearing a light gold jumper, white turtle neck, and gold knee length socks.

Who Turned in Anne Frank and The Others

Anne Frank told her story through her diary of her life during WWII as a young Jewish girl. It opened a lot of people's eyes and helped people understand what it was like for the Jews at this time. Her diary is available worldwide and is used as a way to help teach how WWII was for the Jews at the time.

By August 4, 1944 police in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam raided a warehouse. Anne Frank and 7 other Jews who were hiding in an annex behind a bookcase were found and arrested along with their 2 helpers.

It was believed by those involved that someone had betrayed the group. That some one called the SD and let them know where they were hiding. There was no evidence that this had happened.

Anne's father Otto and believed it to be, a worker at the warehouse, who wasn't in on the deal. He claimed he wasn't the one to betray the group.

SD officer Silberbauer who was involved with the arrest only mentioned "a Dutchman" as the caller. But his statements were inconsistent as he later stated he didn't know if a phone call was even made. He was asked about this around 20 years after the fact. so his memory may have been hazy for this specific arrest or merged with a memory of another. The human memory is a fickle thing.

In another story, is Julius Dettmann an SD officer stated that it was a woman who made the call. Dettmann died two weeks after liberation in his cell. Silberbauer stated Dettmann never told him who had made a call or if it was a woman. Someone had told Otto Anne's father that Dettmann told them it was a woman.

The people betrayed that day believed that it may have been William Van Maaren. He was a worker at the warehouse and wasn't in on the deal. The people in hiding shared their suspicion of him even though they never got to meet him. Otto later filed a complaint with the political police, but it was dismissed as there was no evidence he had done it and he claimed to not have had anything to do with it.

Tony Ahlers is another suspect in the betrayal. He is a Dutch national socialist and Otto did not get along. He knew Otto was against the German war chanced and pressured and extracted money from him. There was no evidence though that he had known they were hiding in the Annex.

A female suspect of the betrayal was Lena Hartog. Her husband Lamont worked for the warehouse and had told her that he had helped hide people in there. She knew there were people hiding there, but it isn't known if she was told before or after the fact of the raid.

Another female suspect was Ans van Dijk who was a Jewish woman forced to help the SD turn in other Jews.

There is still no idea of who turned in them and it is still being investigated today.

Murder of Reverend George C. Haddock

In 1882 a law was passed in Iowa called the "Clark Law" making Liquor illegal. The frontier city of Sioux did not take kindly to the law as they ignored it. It also turned the town from being rough straight to a lawless frontier. The town had over 75 saloons, several breweries, and gambling houses.

Many were against the law, but some were for it especially after two murders had happened in drinking establishments. There were some who wanted changes to where Sioux City would follow the law. One of these people was 56-year-old Reverend George C. Haddock.

On August 3, 1886, the Reverend was going about noting the things about liquor. That morning he was seen noting the unloading of beer from one of the brewery wagons. Fred Lerch was standing in front of his business further up the street and screamed at the Reverend that he would cut his d-d head off if he came near there.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a shot was heard on 3rd and Waters street. Reverend George Haddock had been shot and killed. The person shot him from 25 feet away. It was no secret in why he was murdered he even told someone he expected death. He was more than likely killed for his fight against liquor.

John Arensdorf was a suspect that went to trial twice. First with a hung jury and second with a not guilty. Despite there having been witnesses that night that saw John kill the Reverend. It was said that John had gone to a bar after the trial with the jurors.

Although technically unsolved it's believed that John did have something to do with

Soon after the Reverend's death liquor was completely banned from Sioux City and the businesses were moved to South Sioux City in Nebraska. But five years later Clark Law was repealed allowing liquor to be legal again.
