Disappearance of Thora Afton Chamberlain

On November 2, 1945, 14-year-old Thora Afton Chamberlain was last seen outside her High School in Campbell California. School was over and she was planning to go to the football game after school. In 20 days she would have been celebrating her 15th birthday.

Her classmates saw her speaking for several minutes to a man in a vehicle. One of the witnesses said he was dressed like an ex-serviceman and was looking for a babysitter for his sister's children. She got into the vehicle with him presumably to take the babysitting job. She was never seen again.

Thomas Henry McGonigle was immediately a suspect in Thora's disappearance. He had an arrest record dating back to his teens including assault and intent to commit rape. When he found that they suspected him he fled to his fathers home in Illinois. On December 6, 1945, he returned to Sanfransico, California by bus. He tried to attempt suicide on the bus by taking sleeping pills. He tried to overdose but recovered after treatment at the hospital.

Several classmates and witnesses Identified him as the man she left with. It was found he was wearing stolen Navy-issue clothes and military medals and was not an ex-serviceman. He said he had found the clothing in a footlocker he'd stolen. The footlocker was later found in his garage.

He claimed responsibility for Thora's abduction and murder. He had various different statements about how Thora was killed. He claimed he had stabbed her, strangled her, fell out of his car, shot her, and that her death was accidental and he didn't kill her.

It's more likely he shot her in his car. He'd claimed her shot her accidentally and because she bled on the padding and upholstery he tore it out. He told the FBI where he had buried it and they found it and it was stained with blood.

There was also a bullet hole in the door of his car. He'd claimed to have removed it and buried it under a tree in his yard. The FBI found it and determined it had been fired from his .32-caliber Colt Revolver.

Not only did he give different statements on how he killed her he did the same with how he disposed of her. He'd said he had thrown her body off the 350 ft cliff known as the Devil's Slide. It overlooks Half Moon Bay on the San Mateo County coast. two pairs of red and blue socks were found wedged in two different crevices part way down the cliff face that belonged to her.

At the time he had been working at a construction site and got permission from his boss to fill a ditch with concrete blocks. Inside the ditch were Thora's shoes, schoolbooks, papers, binder, and cowbell. He told them he buried her clothes in his yard, but they turned up nothing.

More than likely she rejected his sexual advances and she was killed. He tossed her body off Devil's Slide and possibly her body was carried out to sea.

Mcgonigle confessed to another murder as he was on death row for Thora's. He didn't get charged due to begin on death row. At one point he claimed to have killed 11 people, but they couldn't be verified.

Before his execution from the gas chamber in 1948, he retracted his statement. He claimed to have been innocent of all involvement in Thora's disappearance.

Thora is a white female and was 14-year-old at the time of her disappearance. She was 5'2" and around 120 lbs. She had brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing Garbarand coat, white blouse, red skirt, blue sweater, and two pairs of socks one being red and one being blue, and tan shoes.

John Wayne Gacy the "Killer Clown"

John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a Chicago area construction worker and was even a clown performer for kids parties called "Pogo the Clown".He was well liked by people in the community and most never would had suspected he was the reason boys were going missing in the Cook County, Illinois. No one expected him to be the monster he became.

Gacy was born to a blue collar family in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up Gacy had a troubled childhood. His father was a drunk who would beat the family with a razor strap if he believed they were misbehaving. Gacy also had issues coming to terms with his bi-sexuality.

Gacy was also isolated at school because of his congenital heart disease. He couldn't play with the other kids like he wanted. Even though Gacy was tested to be highly intelligent he had dropped out of high school.

After her dropped out of high school he moved to Las Vegas and became a janitor for a mortuary for a while before moving back to Chicago. When he returned he went to business school. After graduation his first job included management trainee for a Nunn Bush Shoe Company where within a year he excelled and managed a clothing store in Springfield, Illinois.

In 1966 He married his 1st wife and began to work for his father in law in Iowa. He began a family with his then wife. In 1968 Gacy was convicted of sodomizing a male employee. His wife filed for divorce. Upon hearing this he told his wife that her and the children were dead to him.

He was sentenced 10 years in prison, but only spent 18 months . He was paroled in 1970 and moved back to Chicago to become a contractor and started his own construction business. In February of  1971 he was charged in the attempted rape of a young man. The young man didn't show up to court and the charges were dropped. In middle of the 1970's two more men accused him of rape.

By 1975 Gacy was married to his second wife. He had told her that he was bi-sexual and was going to stop having sex with her. She'd find homosexual magazines, and he'd bring home boys to his garage. In 1976 she took her two daughters and divorced Gacy. The two never had children together.

On December 11, 1978 15 year old Robert Piest had disappeared. He'd told his mother he was going to visit Gacy for some job opportunities. When he didn't return home. On December 21 police searched Gacy's home in Norwood Park Township, Illinois.

Gacy knowing that soon they will discover his secret admitted he killed 33 boys. He tried to claim that he had multiple personalities and one of the other personalities did it.

He sat on death row for 12 of the 21 life sentences.

He claimed to have dumped his last 5 bodies in the Des Plains River as he was running out of space in the crawlspace.

Gacy died on May 10, 1994 from lethal injection.

The Murders:

Gacy was considered "charming" and would tell boys that he had job opportunities or would pick up young prostitutes or runaways with the promise of money in exchange for sex. He would often pick up the boys from bus stations. His known victims ages range from 14 to 21 years old. Out of the 33 victims 6 still remain unidentified by July of 2018.

Once he got the boys in his home he would trick the boys into trying a handcuff trick in which he would subdue the boys, sexually assault, torture, and murder them. At least 5 of the boys worked at Gacy's business.  A few made it out alive, but 33 didn't.

Gacy's first murder happened in 1972 where he'd stabbed to death teenager Tim McCoy. His next murder happened two years later in 1974 he killed an unidentified victim. Even though he stabbed his first victim, he chose to strangle the rest. By 1976 Gacy was already connected to two boys who he claimed to have runaway. The family's suspected Gacy of hurting them, but there was no evidence of it.

After Gacy's wife divorced him in 1976 he called them the "cruising years" as he was able to bring the boys home without worrying. That he was free to hunt for victims and this was when a majority of victims were killed.

Murder of Jodine "Jodi" Serrin

SOLVED
In November of 2018 DNA was matched to a man. David Marbito was 38 at the time of the crime. His DNA wasn't in the database. It wasn't stated how a connection was made, but Morabito had his DNA previously gathered  at a traffic stop prior to his 2011 suicide. He had matched the suspect to another case. The sample was never processed due to his suicide shortly after.

CASE
Jodine "Jodi" Serrin was a lively kind woman. She grew up in Ohio and made her way to California with her parents. She had many hobbies one of which was flower arranging. Which she had acquired a certificate for floral design. She loved horseback riding, crafts, ice skating, biking, and long walks on the beach. She helped volunteer for her church and Humane Society.

She was mentally handicapped and needed help from family and friends regularly. She was able to live on her own, but if she needed rides she'd asked family and friends. She was typically good with keeping in contact with people.

On February 14, 2007, 39-year-old Jodi wasn't answering her parent's phone calls. She was close with them and would typically answer. By 10 p.m. her parents decided to head over to her Condo in San Diego, California.

The door was locked from the inside. They had to break the deadbolt in order to get in. Her parents thought that they were walking in on a private moment when they looked in her bedroom. They saw a man (Who we know as a Morbito now) engaged in sexual contact with Jodi. Her father demanded that the man put on his pants and leave. They waited in another room for the pair. When they went to check up on them and the man was gone and Jodi was dead. He more than likely went out the front door undetected as it was out of view from the parents.

DNA has been used to make a profile of the killer and predict what he may look like. There haven't been any images of Morbito posted.

One-Eyed Jack Doe

There are many reasons on why someone murders. Sometimes it’s for money, out of passion, or jealousy. The reason that Jesse Burt Bishop murdered One-Eyed Jack was because he thought that he was being annoying.

This John Doe had acquired the nickname One-Eyed Jack due to him missing his left eye. He also wore an eyepatch, but there was a a large white marble with orange coloration found with him. It’s believed that was used as a fake eye. The murderer was not sure, but believed that the victim's name may had either been Jack or John.

One Eyed Jack was picked up by Boise Idaho by Bishop who was heading to Alaska. The hitchhiker told Bishop that he was heading to Pendleton, Oregon. Once Bishop mentioned that he was heading to Alaska Jack asked his he could go along and the two headed together there. While going through Canada the victim got on his nerves. Bishop killed his victim soon after coming into Alaska and left his body in the woods along the roadway.

Bishop stated the victim had an Oregon driver’s license. He was a white male was around 32 years old and approximately 6 ft and 165 lbs. The victim had long dark hair and wore a headband. He was missing his left eye and wore an eyepatch a large marble was found in his pants and it had an orange coloring to it. The victim is more than likely from the Northwest area of the U.S.

Bishop thought the victim had been hurt during a logging accident from a choker cable in Oregon. Bishop also stated that he thought the victim worked for a Lincoln car dealership washing cars in either Colorado or Utah. At one point the victim said that he had been married.

Bishop didn’t know if any of the information he had was accurate as he claimed that the victim lied to him quite a bit.

Anthropologist provided that the Bishop was accurate about describing the man. He was white male between 25 to 35 years-old with brown medium curly hair and was approximately 5'11.

It is possible that One-Eyed Jack did not settle in one place. With the information that Bishop gave with him being in Oregon, Idaho, possibly in Colorado and or Utah and then making a split second decision to go to Alaska with a complete stranger it could be possible that he did not settle in one place. He possibly lived a nomadic life. He was initially heading Oregon and if his license was from Oregon and he acquired his injury from Oregon then it’s possible that he might be originally from there or spent a significant amount of time there.

Jesse Burt Bishop died in the 2000’s before his victim had found his name.

Dental and Fingerprints are available.
