Murder of Jodine "Jodi" Serrin

SOLVED
In November of 2018 DNA was matched to a man. David Marbito was 38 at the time of the crime. His DNA wasn't in the database. It wasn't stated how a connection was made, but Morabito had his DNA previously gathered  at a traffic stop prior to his 2011 suicide. He had matched the suspect to another case. The sample was never processed due to his suicide shortly after.

CASE
Jodine "Jodi" Serrin was a lively kind woman. She grew up in Ohio and made her way to California with her parents. She had many hobbies one of which was flower arranging. Which she had acquired a certificate for floral design. She loved horseback riding, crafts, ice skating, biking, and long walks on the beach. She helped volunteer for her church and Humane Society.

She was mentally handicapped and needed help from family and friends regularly. She was able to live on her own, but if she needed rides she'd asked family and friends. She was typically good with keeping in contact with people.

On February 14, 2007, 39-year-old Jodi wasn't answering her parent's phone calls. She was close with them and would typically answer. By 10 p.m. her parents decided to head over to her Condo in San Diego, California.

The door was locked from the inside. They had to break the deadbolt in order to get in. Her parents thought that they were walking in on a private moment when they looked in her bedroom. They saw a man (Who we know as a Morbito now) engaged in sexual contact with Jodi. Her father demanded that the man put on his pants and leave. They waited in another room for the pair. When they went to check up on them and the man was gone and Jodi was dead. He more than likely went out the front door undetected as it was out of view from the parents.

DNA has been used to make a profile of the killer and predict what he may look like. There haven't been any images of Morbito posted.

  1. Just curious: The detectives indicated that because their were no signs of forced entry into the victim's apartment, they were fairly certain that the victim knew her attacker and that she had let him inside. However, all of the articles about this case focus entirely on the DNA hit, but none mentions if they ever found any connection between the victim and her attacker. Any information on this?
