Disappearance of Eva Gerline Debruhl

On June 29, 1977, 15-year-old Eva Gerline Debruhl was last seen at her home in Catawba, South Carolina. She had mowed the yard and went inside to make some ice tea. Her father was called to go into work and left after 11 a.m. Her mother was asleep but woke up to see Eva was gone by noon.

A pot of iced tea and a glass was found undisturbed in the house. T.V. was on and Eva's flip flops were in the front lawn. But there was no sign of Eva. None of her clothes were gone, except what she was wearing and her glasses.

Eva's grandmother lived near them and noticed a late model blue and white or green and white jeep-type vehicle drive up to their home. She saw a man speaking to someone through the screen door and her grandmother assumed he was talking to Eva's father about working on a car. She didn't know he'd already been gone by then.

He eventually left but came back 10 to 15 minutes later. Eva's grandmother didn't notice if it stopped a second time or if her granddaughter got into the vehicle. It's unknown if he's connected to Eva's disappearance. He is described as Caucasian and of medium height and build. He wore a light green shirt and dark green pants.

It's suspected that Eva may have been abducted and/or murdered.

Eva is a white female and 15 years old at the time. She's 5'1" to 5'2" and 105 lbs. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a pink floral sweater and light blue floral short and wasn't wearing socks or shoes.

Seven Yellow Balloons

In 1967 the Cold War had been going on, the Soviet Union and Cuba had diplomatic ties. On June 29, 1967, on the Florida coast near Hallandale, a crate was 18 inches and no bigger than a breadbox was spotted floating in the ocean. It was stamped "Property of U.S.S.R." and addressed to Institute of Mineral Resources of Cuba. Inside the crate was seven yellow balloons with black rubber stoppers.

It was indicated on the box that they were shipped from Leningrad, Russia and was supposed to go to Havana, Cuba. It's possible that the crates were in the water for at least 8 weeks.  The crates were listed as50 kg  (110 lbs)but they were only 13.6 kg (30 lbs). The air inside the balloons was originally believed to have been toxic. But it was found that there was no indication of the air being poisonous.

Another crate was found 217 km away in Marathon. The only difference in this crate was that it was empty. There were no balloons in it and the reason for the boxes to be shipped off this way is still a mystery. It's not believed that this was a hoax.
