Disappearance of John William Gates

1912 photo of John Gates.
John William Gates had left his home in Longmont, Colorado on April 23, 1916. His wife had no idea of his whereabouts and had not heard from him again after he left on. When his wife in May of 1917 filed for "Mother's Compensation in Boulder county she had to explain why she needed help and her husband's disappearance. The Mother's Compensation Act was a way for mother's to provide for their children. This was long before social services. His wife believed he may have had an accident that caused his death or prevented him from coming back home. It isn't believed he left on his own. He was said to be a good provider and a good husband and wonderful father.

In the early 1880's John was born in Iowa. Before 1900 he moved to Colorado and was a farm laborer. In 1903 he married his wife and they settled in Longmont, Colorado. By 1910 his occupation was listed as teamster in transfer, his family claimed that it meant that he delivered supplies to miners in the mountains.

He may have been involved in a mining accident  or the wagon he used to move mining supplies had fallen off the mountain. Around this time in this area of Colorado there were several mines open due to the need of tungsten during WWI. It could also be possible that his remains may have been found in the mountains later, but they were never identified as him.

John William Gates was 34 at the time of his disappearance. He was 5'7 to 6'0 and weighed around 160 to 180 lbs. He had brown receding hair and his eye color is unknown.

DNA is available, but Fingerprints and Dentals are not.

Death of Vicki Lynn Harrell

Vicki Lynn Harrell was a 25-year-old divorcee who was last seen alive on August 12, 1972. She was seen getting into a four-door, dark blue 1965 Plymouth Valiant in the K-Mart parking lot in Bloomington, Indiana.

When her roommate had not heard from her they got worried. They reported her missing on August 13, 1972. Her car was found on August 14, 1972, near the parking lot of College Mall in Bloomington, Indiana. The body of Vicki Harrell was found the same day.

Her nude body was found lying face down in a water-filled ditch on an access road to McCormick's Creek State Park, approximately 2.5 miles east of Spencer, Indiana. Her body had signs of sexual assault. She had been strangled and had the letters KN carved into her chest after death.

I do realize in official reports and in the newspapers that Vicki's name is spelled as Vickie. I used the spelling of Vicki because that was what was on her gravestone.

The Legend of Peter Dromgoole

Picture of Gimghoul Castel

The legend of Peter Dromgoole and Fannie is a long time legend for the campus of University of North Carolina  at Chapel Hill. This story is popular among students of University of North Carolina. It's a traditional story involving ghosts, passion, love, and a tragic end. Unlike many other Urban Legends this one has a base in truth.

Peter was the son of a prominent family. His grandfather was Reverend Edward Dromgoole an Catholic Irish native who came to America and renounced his Catholicism and became a Methodist Minister in 1770. His Grandfather played an important part in the growth of Methodism in North Carolina. His father Edward Dromgoole II was also a Methodist minister, planter, his mother was Sarah Creese Pelham. His younger brother Edward Dromgoole III graduated from University of North Carolina and was the one of the editors of  first volume of University Magazine. His uncle was Congressman George C. Dromgoole.

Peter was known as a wild child and was daring to anything, loved fast horses, lose women and drinking. In 1832 Peter was sent to  Franklin Male Academy in Louisburg, North Carolina. In 1833 he was sent to Chapel Hill as a freshman. Peter caused troubles at school and a letter was even sent to his father to retrieve his son. Peter claimed that he would not and never go, but soon Peter would disappear to never be seen again.

One popular story is that Peter soon fell in love with a local girl named Fannie. Fannie and Peter used to meet in secret at a large rock at Piney Prospect, near where Gimgoul castle now resides. Another student had also fallen in love with pretty Fannie. the other man was jealous and envious of the relationship between Fannie and Peter. He had challenged Peter to a duel, and supposedly Peter lost his life that night and was buried and that rock that Fannie and him used to meet at was placed upon it. The rock was stained with his blood and never washed away.

Dear Fannie went to the rock day after day and waited for Peter. She then started asking around campus and tried to find him, but he could not. She died a year later from a broken heart.

Another version said that Fannie had found Peter shot through the heart. He had collapsed on the rock that they would meet at and it was stained with his blood. The witnesses to the crime had buried him quickly and placed the rock upon him. Fannie died later that summer saying that Peter was lonely.

To this day people claim to have seen Fannie and Peter's ghosts on the edge of the forest. Dromgoole's rock does exist, but is not accessible to the public.

Many of the students at the time believed that Peter had left on his own. His books were sent to his parent's and his room was found empty. His family believed that he left school and went west where he was robbed and murdered.

They even resorted to wiretapping phones and intercepting mail to try to find Gene. Even though they claim Gene had no information that would deny national security. Murder of Larry Jo Phebus

In October on 1962 14 year old Larry Jo Phebus was living in Tioga, North Dakota with his older brother Chester Phebus and friend Sam Wallace. He had moved from Petersburg, Indiana to live with the two. All three of them were living in a travelers motel, and Chester worked at an oilfield job.

On October 20, 1962 Sam and Chester went on a double date to watch a movie in Willston. They left Larry Jo home alone, and when they got back there was no sign of him. It was strange because whenever Larry Jo would leave he always left a note, so that they wouldn't worry. There was no note left at the motel room.

Chester started his search by asking friends of Larry Jo if they had seen him. He also went and asked people both from Ray and Tioga if they had seen him, but no one had. The last time anyone saw him was that Saturday. On Monday October 22, 1962 Chester told the police that Larry Jo was missing.

Larry Jo was known to hitchhike between Ray and Tioga, but never hitchhiked for over 30 miles. Thinking it could be possible though Chester had contacted his family in California, Illinois, and Indiana to see if Larry Jo had shown up. He never did and never would. On March , 1963 his body was found in a grain field near Alexander, North Dakota on Mar 28, 1963.

On March 28, 1963 Farmers were removing rocks from their field near Alexander, North Dakota when they found a body of a boy. It was obvious that before death the boy had suffered. Larry Jo was found nude with cord wrapped around his wrists and feet tied and neck. He had been strangled to death and sexually assaulted.

Who are The Men In Black?

You are probably more familiar with the Movie series Men In Black about an undercover organization who makes sure alien's aren't known to the human population. In reality the movie is based off the legend of the Men In Black (MIB) and that they've been around for decades.

The Men in Black are dressed in black suits and confront those who claim to witness alien activity. According to Ufologist the purpose of the Men In Black is to try to keep witnesses of alien activity to stay silent. This some times includes the threat of harm. There is no evidence of harm ever happening.

The first encounter with the Men In Black happened in the summer of 1947. A private pilot, Kenneth Arnold spotted 9 shiney discs in the sky. Afterwards other people claimed to have seen something similar all over the world. That same summer, Harold Dahl witnessed UFO's around Tacoma Washington. A man dressed in a dark suit confronted him and told him if he disclosed what he saw that harm would come to him. Dahl's sighting is now known as "The Island Mystery."

This sighting would not be the last of the Men In Black as in the 50's a large number of witnesses claimed to have met them. The thing that is most common about these men is that they arrived in new cars, not exclusively black, with unofficial plate numbers. The Men would always be dressed in a black or  dark suit and black Homburg hat. It was believed that they were part of a government organization.

Some even claim that the MIB had telekinetic powers. The powers include knowing when someone in lying to them and they knew a lot of personal information that they shouldn't. Some described it that it seemed as if they were impersonating human beings.

There has been a decline in the reports of Men In Black.

Murder of Anthony Adams

On November 6, 1978 friends of 25-year-old Anthony, Tony, Adams were worried about him. They hadn't seen or heard from him in a few days. Rev. Bob Waldrop, Bill Woodbury (Tony's boyfriend) and another friend went to his apartment at 125 1st Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah. When they didn't get an answer Bill crawled through a window to find his boyfriend had been murdered. Tony's body was found in his bedroom he had been nude and covered in blood. He had been stabbed in his neck, chest, and his throat sliced with a butcher knife. He had been dead for several days and more than likely died on November 3rd.

Tony Adams was an African American activist who fought for Gay Rights. He even had a hand in organizing the Anita Bryant Protest in 1977. Anita Bryant was a singer and former beauty queen who was against gay rights. The Anita Bryant Protest was a big step in Gay Rights in Utah. Tony wanted to see the world changed for the better and have it be more aware. He was even called a "True Freedom Fighter," by Rev. Bob Waldrop.

The Salt Lake police were already investigating another cold case in the area. Coincidentally another murder of 16 year old Sharon Schollmeyers happened in the same apartment building. It isn't believed that the two were murdered by the same person.

It is believed that Tony Adam's murder might be one of many hate crimes that were happening in the area against homosexuals. It could also have been because Tony was a campaign manager for Bill Hoyle in the Nov. 7 election, so it could have been politically motivated.

What is Filicide?

Filicide is the term used for parent's who murder their own children or step children. The children can be from any age from newborns to adults.. According to a U.S.  study done in 2014 based on 32 years of data there are at least 500 filicide instances in a single year. according to this study at least 50 of the cases of filicide from the last five years were on the disabled. Within the last three decades the act of filicide has decreased since the 90's and did not increase with population increase.

A majority of filicide has children 6 and under fill up 72% of filicides. 10% were between 7 and 18 and 18% were on Adult children. 1/3 of all the deaths were of infants who were less than a year old.It was found that during times of higher economic stress that there are more cases of filicides (infanticide) involving infants.

A father killing their son is more possible (29.5%) than a mother killing her son (22.1%) In the cases involving daughters a mother will more than likely kill her (19.7%) than a father (18.2%). The rarest cases are with step mothers killing their step son (.5%) or step daughter (.3%).

Parents were more than likely to use their hand when murdering their child. Some examples are forced drowning, beating and or choking which is the case with 69% of infanticide. As the victim gets older weapons like guns are used which is the case with 72.3% of adult victims. Contact weapons like bats and edged weapons like knives were less likely used. Men were more than likely to use a gun than women. Stepparents are more than likely to use guns (40%)  than biological parents (21%).

Many parent's kill their children for many reasons. Some kill their children due to their child's disability, and some do it because the child was unwanted. Some even kill their children and themselves. There are just so many reasons as each case has is different.

The Murder of John Robert Hill

On the morning of November 22, 1976, at 5 a.m. two young men went to Ottumwa Launderette and found a body lying face down. It was soon found out that it was the laundromat's 51 years old owner John Robert Hill.

It was believed that he had been attacked during a robbery. It was a bloody mess with obvious signs of a long struggle. There were also words written in blood by someone saying "black" or "lack" and the word "older". It's unknown if it was actually written by Hill. If it was though it is possible that it was written to describe the attacker if he didn't know him.

The attack on Hill was brutal. Hill had been stabbed 21 times and was shot with a .25-caliber pistol. The piston was laying near Hill's right hand. It had been fired 5 times. The police found 5 bullet holes by the front door but only found 4 bullets. Hill's pockets were turned inside out and it is believed that the murderer took off with several hundreds of dollars.

This case is currently unsolved. The police do have suspects, but no one has ever been prosecuted due to there not being enough evidence to stand up in court.

Disappearance of April Nicole Williams

On December 3, 1983, four months old April Williams was with her mother, Eleanor Marie Williams, were en-route by bus from Suffolk, Virginia to Kansas to meet with a boyfriend. They were having a three-hour layover at Trailways Station in Washington, D.C.

Allegedly a woman who went by Latoya asked Eleanor if she could hold April. Eleanor didn't know the woman, but she let her carry April. She carried April towards Hardee's to get a soda. This is the last time anyone had seen April.

Her abductor, Latoya, was described as an African American woman in her early 20's. She was around 5'3 with red braided hair. It's possible that "Latoya" kidnapped April to raise as her own.
