On the afternoon of October 9, 1995, 14-year-old was a last seen alive near his home in Oxon Hill, Maryland. On October 13, 1995, his body would be found on a logging road off of Covington Road in Brandywine. He had been shot several times in his upper body.
At the time Sterling was a 9th-grade student at Oxon Hill High School.
