On the night of June 10, 2005 22-year-old Katrina Jefferies left her mom and her young son at home in Auckland, New Zealand. She went off to go to the liquor store and was never seen again. Her mother would report her missing.
Two days later Katrina's body would be found in a local dumpsite in Auckland's Waikowhai Reserve 1 kilometer from her home. She had been found by someone walking their dog. She was naked and had been wrapped in a red tarp, yellow PVC raincoat, and black plastic bag. It's not stated how she had died, but police did state it was highly unusual. It's believed that the killer had to choose between going for medical help or letting her die and they chose letting her die.
Her body had been partially rolled down the hill. She had been murdered either on Sunday night or Monday morning. It was believed that her killer probably waited till that morning to dump her body there. There was a large landscape print and piece of marine plywood, also found with Katrina’s body to one address in the Mt Roskill area. It's believed that these items were left to help conceal or give an excuse why the killer was there.
There was CCTV video of a dark red / burgundy vehicle parked at the top of Waikowhai reserve around this time, with its boot up and a person with his shirt off walking away from the vehicle to the then Caltex petrol station across the road. This person may be the suspect or a witness.
Katrina had left the home wearing blue tracksuit pants, a black duffle coat, size 10 burgandy slip on shoes, a peak cape, and a black Walkman cassette player. None of these items were recovered.
