Murder of Charlene Johnson-Lane

In 1978 28 year old Charlene Johnson-Lane lived in Saginaw, Michigan. She had a few recent changes to her life. She was separated from her husband, and had no children.  She used to party and hang out with the wrong crowd, but had changed her life. She was even going to church and singing in the choir.

On Feb. 12, 1978 the Saginaw News got a call they'd never thought they'd get. Greg Branch a reporter at the time, and later the mayor answered the call. He says the voice still haunts him to this day. The caller left a simple and terrifying message.

"Yeah, I'd like to report a murder." They said, " She's at 1616 Walnut. She's been strangled, raped, and stabbed." He also claimed that he was put on hold by the police and decided to call the News station instead.

Greg Branch described the voice as someone who sounded like someone on drugs. It was believed to have been initially a prank, but he called the police just in case. The police went to the home and found it was locked and left.

Another phone call came into the police station telling them to come back. Meaning the caller was watching. The second time they made their way in and found a grisly sight. Charlene was found face down in a pool of her own blood. She was strangled, raped, and beaten just as the caller said.

This wasn't the last call the killer made that week.

On Wednesday He called the News Station again, this time Mike Beyer, a reporter, answered the call. He claimed that he was the killer and wanted to turn himself in. He was afraid that the police would hurt him though if he tried.  Beyer tried to tell the caller police won't hurt him if he came in with Beyer. The man said he wanted to and would call back, but he never did.

On Friday the police received another call from him. But because the shift commander he was looking for wasn't on duty he hung up. This was the last time that the anonymous caller made contact. This unfortunately left no clues to who the caller was or who had murdered Charlene.
