Unknown Artists: Painter of the Berlin Dancing Girl

Berin Dancing Girl

It's believed that they were one of the first South Italian red-figure painters. He was likely educated in an Attic workshop and he seemed to have influences from the Phiale Painter who worked in Attica. He and his followers likely had workshops in Taras (modern day Taranto).

Works Attributed to him

  • An Amphora that depicts Briseis and Achilles on it.

Lovers Of Valdaro

In 2007 the skeletal remains now known as The Lovers of Valdaro or Valdaro Lovers were found at a Neolithic tomb in San Giorgio near Mantua, Italy. The two skeletons were buried face to face with their arms around each other much like a lovers embrace. Double burials like this would have been rare at the time. They did not die in this position and were placed in the grave this way 6,000 years ago.

The pair of skeletons were one female and one male neither above the age of 20. Their deaths are unknown but it isn't believed to be violent as the bones showed no signs of damage. The male skeleton was found with a flint arrow near the neck and the female had a long flint blade along the thigh, plus two knives under the pelvis. It's believed these weapons were grave goods.

A block of dirt with the couple was placed in a wooden box leaving the remains undisturbed. Right now the couple is permanently displayed inside a glass case in the National Archeological Museum of Mantua.

The Yingpan Man

The Yingpan Man is a mummy that was found in the Tarim Basin in China. He was 6'6" tall and had brown hair in a top bun. It's likely he was caucasian in his mid to late '30s. He had died in the 4th or 5th century, and his cause of death is either unknown or unstated.

The Yingpan Man was found with a white mask on his face with a golden diadem across the upper forehead. He was wearing clothing that was a red, deep purple, and gold color. They had a pair of embroidered pants, decorative footwear, robe, and a belt woolen caftan. Everything was greatly detailed, and a miniature set was placed on his chest. Likely so he'd have something to change into in his next life. His clothing indicated that he had great wealth.

With his clothing, when he died and the area he was buried it leads to the belief he was a wealthy tradesman on the Silk Road. His clothing is an example of what would have been woven in the Eastern Roman Empire and traded with the Tarim Basin and died far from his homeland.
