Murder of Thecla M. Gerken

In 1919 23-year-old Thecla Gerken who was a school teacher from Woonsocket, South Dakota, and was staying at the home of Dr. H.H. Hagedorn at 1017 Jones St. She was friends with H.H Hagedorn's wife and was taking her vacation here. On the night of June 27, 1919, Thecla and another girl, Mable Houlihan, who she also knew went on a walk.

The girls would say their goodbyes as they neared 8th st. Mable would walk towards her home on 9th st. and Thecla would cross the intersection of 9th and Jones st. diagonally. Mable was almost to the alley when she heard Thelca scream "Mabel, come back!" which was followed by a gunshot.

Mable would rush to her friend. She said there were people on the street who pointed towards her friend who was now laying on the ground. She had blood coming from her mouth and had been shot in the chest.

All that was known was that Thecla had been shot by a young man. She was seen talking to the young man and the witness claimed they heard her say "George, why did you do that?" They were too far away to hear anything else of the conversation. He had shot her with a .38 caliber gun and fled down an alleyway. One article stated that someone chased after him, but could not catch up to him and lost him.

Thecla was new to town and only knew very few people let alone have enemies. The two girls did meet a couple of young men the day before and set a date for that day but did not show up to it. It's unknown if her killer was one of these men.

It's suspected that the man who Thecla was talking to for a brief moment before her death was a poorly dressed man that she and Mable had passed by earlier. Police believe it could have been possible that it was a woman disguised as a man. The man or woman was never found and Mabel's case will remain unsolved.

Lost Media: The Guyra Ghost

On June 25, 1921 A film called, The Guyra Ghost Mystery by John Cosgrove was released in Australia. The film was based on the real-life accounts of the Bowen family living in Guyra, South Wales, Australia. The family was suffering from unexplained attacks on their house believing that a ghost was bothering them. In the film, Sherlock Doyle would help the family with their ghost problem. The family would play themselves in the film.

The attacks included were showers of rocks being thrown at the home and loud banging. One of the children, Minnie, would later admit some of the loud sounds and rock-throwing was her as she was trying to scare her sibling. The events seem to have ceased when Minnie came back from a visit with her Grandma at the Glenn Inn. It's likely that there was never any ghost just jokesters.

A 100 years later the film is now lost to time.

Murder of Mary Jane Voller

On December 31, 1898 5-year-old Mary Jane Voller was sent to get a penny worth of linseed oil at a shop only across the street from her home in Barking, London, England. She left the home around 5:10 p.m. with a threepenny and was never seen alive again after that.

After 10 to 15 minutes Mrs. Voller who sent Mary on the errand got worried. The errand should have been quick and it shouldn't have taken this long. Mrs. Voller would ask Mr. Voller, but he believed she was overreacting. He didn't search for her and was trying to finish fixing Mary's shoes.

Mrs. Voller went and looked for her herself. She asked neighbors and went to the shop to ask if they'd seen the 5-year-old. The shopkeeper could not remember the girl as the family had only moved to the area weeks before. But when Mrs. Voller asked if a young girl buying linseed came in the answer was that no one had bought any since 2 that afternoon. This meant that no one had seen Mary, she never made it to the shop and had been taken young Mary within the 10 to 15 minutes she'd been gone. The family did a search was soon done on the streets for Mary.

Mr. Voller searched the streets with his father, and after finding no sign of his daughter they went to the police station. They hoped the girl had wandered off and was lost and reported that she was a lost child.  A description of her was sent out across the country.

Mr. Voller would continue to search unfrequented places for his daughter. They would search abandoned houses and such. Going down Barking-Lane Mr. Voller went over to inspect a shed. Near the shed was a brook and his heart dropped when he saw something floating inside of it.

When they got close to the water the lantern blew out. Knowing there was something floating in the water Mr. Voller went into the water and searched the area blind on his hands and knees where he saw something floating. In his arms was the lifeless body of his daughter.

News soon spread of the discovery. Mr. Voller initially refused to move the body until the police came, but his wife convinced him to bring her home. The police and coroner met them at their home and it was obvious that the girl was brutally murdered.

Mary had been raped she had 2 punctures in her neck, one near her groin, and one on the inside of her left thigh. the wounds were accompanied by scratches and were believed to be done by a blunt object. These did not kill her and it was believed she drowned in the 3 feet. She did not have mud or such in her throat so it's believed she was unconscious or in shock when put in the water.

It's unknown who did this horrific murder to the young girl and will remain unsolved.

Murder of Elva J. Poore

On June 14, 1992, 17-year-old Elva Poore left a note on the kitchen table at her Delaware home stating she was riding to Ocean City with a girlfriend. She promised to call them later that week. Her parents had previously forbidden her from doing so and Elva did so anyway. But instead of going with a girlfriend like she wrote, she had left with some boys from Chesapeake City.

On June 15 a friend of Elva saw her on the boardwalk. She would be seen again by the friend the next morning at The Admiral, a low-budget motel, in the older part of Ocean City. She may have stayed in a separate room from the boys though she didn't have money to pay for it. On at least one of the nights she was gone she stayed in a baseball dugout with one of the boys.

The last time Elva was seen alive was at 3 a.m. on the boardwalk. She was seen arguing with one of the boys. It was also stated she was last seen walking towards Ocean Lodge Motel. Elva would be found dead the next day on Marl Pit Rd off of U.S. 13 Northbound in Odessa.

Elva had cocaine in her system when she had died. She had been hit in the head and it's believed that the person who killed her strangled her to death with their forearm. It's believed more than one person was involved in her death as her body would not have ended up where it was without.

Elva was said to be hanging out with men in their early 20's. These men were recreational drug users.  There are suspects in this case though no arrests were made.
