On August 16, 1975, Randy Pearce and a young relative went fishing in Sherman Lake in New Castle Maine. They would call the police. They would find the body of a partially dressed woman at 8 a.m. in a culvert. It was the body of 19-year-old Florence Lauze.
It was described that her killer had gently placed the water and did not try to conceal her body. Florence had been strangled to death and her body showed signs of a struggle. There were no outward signs of a sexual assault, but that had not been rejected as a possible motive.
Florence was from Brockton, Massachusetts, and was identified days later by family in Massachusetts. At the time Florence was divorced and living with a roommate. At the time she may have been hitchhiking to Damariscotta where her father lived and got a ride from the wrong person.
