On the night of June 29, 2000, 23-year-old Joseph Sass was working at the King George Exxon Gas Station on highway #78 and King George Road in Bernards Township, New Jersey. Around 9:20 p.m. several witnesses saw a black male come to the gas station on foot from the south side entrance. He would enter the vending machine area of the building and then he went to have a brief conversation about the vending machine taking dollar bills with Joseph.

Witness said that the man asked Joseph for some change, and Joseph took a large amount of money from his pocket. This was when the man brought out a gun and asked for all the money. Joseph gave him the money and the man shot him in the head and fled the same way he came. Joseph was able to make it to the hospital but died soon after.

The man was a black male between 20 to 30-years-old. He was 5'9" to 6'1" and thin with a dark complexion. Witnesses observed a late model. dark-colored commercial type van fleeing the area and proceeded westbound onto Route #78. It's not stated if they think or know if the suspect was in the car.
