Murder of Michael Steven Akey

On June 14, 1972 14 year old Michael Steven Akey and two of his friends were hitchhiking. The three had caught a ride with a man in a 1962/63 four door Chevrolet. While his two friends were attempting to steal watermelons in Burton, South Carolina at Trammell's Market, near Joe Frazier Road and Godwin Road. Next thing the two boys know the man drove off with Michael in his car. This was the last time anyone saw him alive.

Six years later on February 8, 1978 workers were clearing land near Whitehall Plantation, on Lady's Island. In the process they found the body skeleton remains of a boy. They were identified as Michael's, but it wasn't until 2005 when the remains were exhumed it was confirmed that the body was in fact Michael's. Sadly the driver has not been identified and they are still searching for him.
