On the night of September 9, 1984,54-year-old Livingston County Deputy Sherrif Carnie Hopkins was working. Around 11:20 p.m. he notified dispatch that he was checking on a hitchhiker on US 60 and Highway 137 about 3 miles East of Smithland, Kentucky. The intersection was also known as "The Monument". A few minutes later a dispatcher on the way to work found his body. A struggle had happened and he was somehow shot with his own gun.
