Meanwhile, Divvy Bates is being pressured to marry Elsie Case by Elsie's mother,Georgia Case, and Divvy's father, J.T. Bates. Elsie's mother wanted her to marry rich and Divvy was the perfect candidate. The two would arrange for Divvy and Elsie to have a trip to the Bates remote cabin. This was so Elsie could get the chance to extract a proposal from Divvy.

The hired hand Baptiste is fired and retaliates by burning down the cabin. The party is then forced to go to Professor Sperry's and Margot's cave.
