Around 5:30 p.m. on October 26, 1982, 16-year-old Sharon Thorn was getting ready in her Franklin Township home for her weekly ballet lesson three miles away in Bound Brook.
Sharon's father was relaxing in the living room and her mother was in the kitchen. Her mother noted that when Sharon answered the phone she was pleasantly surprised. In order to get some privacy, she went as far as she could into the cellar stairway. The conversation was brief and soon after hanging up she hurried outside. She told her mother she would be right back because she knew they were leaving in fifteen to dance lessons.
A kid playing in his front yard noticed that Sharon had gotten into the passenger side of a vehicle that pulled up next to the house. The house was described as old and dirty, and the muffler was loud. Something may have been blocking the inside rear window. The kid noticed that the person driving didn't seem familiar as he backed up and drove in front of Sharon's house. The driver was a white male with dark-colored hair.
This was the last time anyone saw Sharon alive.
Three days later on October 29, 1982, Sharon's body was found in a wooded area less than a quarter of a mile from her home in a wooded area. Sharon had been beaten to death possibly with a two by four and cinderblock. It was found she died around an hour after disappearing. There was an attempt to conceal the body.
The area was popular with local teens who hunted, rode dirt bikes, and was a party place and a place people socialize regularly. The area was off limit to private vehicles there was a continuous flow of vehicles due to its popularity with teens.
It's believed that there may have been more than one perp and that Sharon may have known them. The people seen picking her up were in their late teens early 20's.
