Murder of Rosa Tapia

On August 13, 1995, 6-year-old Rosa"Rosie" Tapia and her 4-year-old brother were sleeping in her bed together. At 2 a.m. their mother went to check on them and saw them sleeping. The room was located in the families basement apartment in Salt Lake City, Utah.

About 4 hours later at 5:45 a.m. Rosie was found to be missing.  Her bedroom window screen was removed and someone entered the room and kidnapped the girl. Police were notified and a search was initiated.  It's believed she was kidnapped between 2:30 and 5:30 a.m.

Her brother stated that there was a man with a beard in their room. He didn't know who it was and he told him to go back to sleep.

The day before Rosie was carried the apartment by a man. Her older sister took her sister from the man. She asked why he was carrying her and he responded that she hurt herself on the playground slide. The man had known Rosie's name. Her sister questioned her about hurting herself, and who the man was. Rosie stated she didn't get hurt on the slide like he said and that she didn't know who he was or how he knew her name.

Around 10 a.m. a man walking his dog spotted her little body floating in the surplus canal around 1900 South and 1600 West. Rosa had been sexually assaulted and drowned. It's suspected that the man who was carrying Rosa the day before is involved.
