March 30, 1881 Centerville, Iowa Newborn Girl

A woman posted a package in Camden and stated that the package was to be paid in Centerville, Iowa. On March 30, 1881, a package was delivered by the train. It was addressed to the county treasurer John Addison Pierson. He's gone to see if any packages were delivered for the county and did not expect this particular package. He paid for the pasteboard package and opened it in his office. Inside the package was a horrible sight the body of a newborn girl was wrapped in an old skirt.

It was obvious that the infant was born alive and was killed. The killer had put either concentrate lye or acid down the baby’s throat. Then the lye or acid was splattered on one side of her face and body. It was not a kind death.

It’s believed that the person who did this was possibly the infant's parents. It’s unknown why the crime wasn’t concealed and why it was sent to Centerville. Maybe they sent the body for a proper burial, but why murder the child in the first place then?
